Unless you’ve lived under a rock, or been enjoying the sunshine away from the internet, you may have noticed that the Chairman of Disney Studios Alan Horn decided to terminate James Gunn’s contract to make Guardians of the Galaxy vol 3. The reason was a series of very crude tweets Gunn posted back in 2009 which have somehow resurfaced and provoked enough outrage for him to be fired.
I don’t know him personally but I have been really saddened at this very harsh decision. Regardless of the impact it will have on the next Guardians movie, this was very much uncalled for. Yes what he tweeted was rude, offensive and very stupid but that doesn’t warrant such a decision, all the more so given how long ago it was.
I can think of one person in particular who daily tweets rude, stupid and offensive messages and yet he is still allowed to rule the most powerful nation on earth. Gunn has owned to his mistakes and posted an explanation here: https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1020154776539967489 . I saw people essentially not giving him the benefit of the doubt because “he was in his 40s” when the tweets were made and should have known the difference between right and wrong (again, looking towards the white house here folks). His brother Sean has posted a series of tweets highlighting thoughts similar to mine far better than I could here: https://twitter.com/seangunn/status/1020786565344382978
As someone who is still looking for an artistic voice while already in my 40s, I can emphatise quite strongly. Yes I probably wouldn’t go towards the dark humour route he went to at the time but that’s not really the point, sometimes art require going beyond the borders of morality, just look at, I dunno, Lord Byron, Picasso, heck even Steven King seems quite keen to kill children in his books, that didn’t phase his publisher…
So I don’t expect some of you to emphatise but if you do, there’s a petition that’s been signed by over 100,000 people and is growing fast you may be interested in signing.
(comments closed, if you feel strongly about it one way, go sign the petition, if you swing the other way, I can only hope you see it from his perspective some day)
