Specifically with regards to that mysterious race. A few more passing references I noticed are a Last Action Hero reference (Jack Slater), modern video games logos (Overwatch, Halo) and that final scene seems to have Aech’s basement being more like a hangar.
Interestingly a lot of emphasis is being put on the DeLorean and the Back to the Future franchise. While the car is owned by Ernie Cline himself, in the book it’s really only used once to go to Ogg’s birthday party.
I hope sufficient homage will be paid to 80s arcade games as a lot of references that have been prominent so far date back to the 90s or 2000s. A recent article has stated that despite trying hard the studio wasn’t able to secure some Star Wars rights so there will be no reference to that franchise, which I am ok with given that it’s barely mentioned in the book at all anyway.
