Project Ara was one of these things I was really looking forward to since the first push for modular phones from Phonebloks (https://phonebloks.com/). Finally the prospect of being able to replace a cracked screen (not that it ever happened to any of my devices) by just buying a new screen was within reach.
That is until the announcement at this year's Google I/O which effectively reduced the modules to gimmicks thus making the modular concept a half-hearted attempt.
So today's news (not quite an announcement as Google hasn't yet commented on this) is not really a surprise, but it's still a disappointment.
Meanwhile modular phones do already exist, the best example being the Fairphone 2. The question now remains on whether this type of device will ever make it to market and who will take up the mantle to overcome the current constraints that Google was unable to beat.
