Trop chou la coccinelle

I came upon this by chance and found it fascinating that words I would give no second thought about using daily while speaking French would sound odd to a non-native. If nothing else this reinforces the notion that while you can learn all about French grammar and its endless exceptions just ask to go to the library the real sign that you've understood the language as it ought to be spoken is when you use words like these.

So here are a few more for your entertainment:

Bordel: [lit: brothel] "A grand mess", can also be used as an interjection in place of "Merde". For example: "C'est le bordel sur la route ce soir" "It's a real mess on the road tonight"

Trop cool [lit: too cool] "Awesome!!" Note that the Lego movie translated Awesome as "super génial" which sounds kinda ringard but I guess they had to make up the syllables for the song…

Mon [something cute, which isn't a cabbage]: Terms of endearment in French can be very creative depending on how smitten you are with your significant other, common terms are "Mon chat", "Mon lapin" (or worse "Mon lapinou"), "Mon coeur" I think I heard "Mon sucre d'orge" (My candy cane) once. Nobody tell my wife!

Super, Hyper, Mega: Increasing value of "very" before an adjective, usually "important" or "cool". Usually "très" and "super" are on equal values but Hyper is more like "very VERY" while Mega approximates "very VERY VERY". And if that's not enough you can combine them for more dramatic effect.

Have fun!

  1. Now I finally understand the dépanneur in Québec ! Let alone why they use that to mean a corner store, I never really got that it has to do with repair, because it literally means to un-break something.
