Trying some fresh nectar

So I've been playing around with the new Google Photos (which doesn't seem to have a Google+ page for some reason) both on the web and on mobile and I thought I'd give some thoughts

First the positive
I'm glad they've extended the unlimited storage to pictures up to 16MP, that will cover pretty much most pictures taken on mobile across the ecosystem, but it's still not going to be for everybody's pictures.

The selection process with tap-hold and drag on mobile is very cool (but doesn't work on the web). The creation of auto-awesomed creations is pretty simple and I like the pinch to zoom to navigate across years of pictures (I have 10 years worth of pictures in my collection)

But if I'm honest, there are more let downs than positives
For a start it mostly feels like a downgrade from either PicasaWeb or from the Google+ Photos app. So where do I start?

Editing of photos is disappointing, you can't edit the exif data, add a location, change the date or tell the system that 2no that picture really isn't a statue so why do you categorise it as such?". Pressing on the search icon to have those Places and Categories appear is a bit counter-intuitive but I suppose once you know it's there it's fine, except am I the only one who doesn't have the "people" section. I was expecting it to magically detect all the pictures of my daughter but instead I get nothing. The Places section can also get it pretty wrong, for instance I have pictures of a march we did in Glasgow once a few years ago, it labelled it under Copenhagen, a town I've never visited.

I've also had issues with deleting some pictures in bulk from the web earlier. Somehow deleting them on mobile and then reloading the page allowed me to make it work but it felt clunky and fiddly.

Edit: I forgot to mention one important point. The ability to organise albums has been completely removed. You can't select an option to order by date or file name nor can you drag and drop an image in a specific spot like you used to.

And I'm not gonna buy the "it's early days" argument, they've had years of learning from both Picasa and Google Plus Photos and the presented product just feels unfinished.

Now I'm actually sharing this from the Photos app on the web so I'm not sure how it'll display on Google+ but that will be interesting to see now that it's an external application.
