The bust of a king

I'm always amused to see how they depicted historical figures in the 19th century. This bust was made by Louis Rochet in 1850 and represents a man I understand to be mostly despised, if not downright hated in England, that is William the Conqueror. The chainmail and the tunic might be fine but there's something odd about that helmet which doesn't scream late 11th century but let's bypass the details.

When we were in Falaise last July I had the opportunity to try a few HDR shots, until now I hadn't had the chance to process them. This is my test shot if you will, though given how difficult it is to get the full exposure correct when shooting a window, HDR was the only option to get a decent shot. If nothing else I like how the metalwork stands out on this.

(I can't help but wonder who modelled for this, the guy has the moustache of one of the old Grognards from Napoleon's army, maybe that's what gives him away as such a 19th c. figure…)
